Written in 1796 for Prussian monarch Fredrick William II, an accomplished cellist, the two Opus 5 sonatas are not only the first sonatas for piano and cello, but Beethoven’s first seriously unique pieces, in which he stepped out from the influence of Haydn and Mozart and asserted himself as an original presence. Malcolm Bilson and Anner Bylsma perform these landmark works here on period instruments in order to recreate the nuances of dynamic, timbre, and pitch originally envisioned by the composer.
